Sander Jansen talks DWDM transceiver advancements for Terabit optical transport at OFC

Short course will provide insights into design tradeoffs, sub-carrier modulation and superchannels to enable Terabit-class optical networks

  • Speakers: Sander Jansen, VP and GM, infrastructure monitoring, Adtran; Dirk van den Borne, director, system engineering, Juniper Networks
  • Topics: Sub-carrier modulation and superchannels for Terabit-class DWDM transceivers
  • When: Monday, March 25, 8:30 a.m. PT
  • Where: OFC, San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, California, USA https://www.ofcconference.org/en-us/home/

The next generation of DWDM transceivers will cross the Terabit-class threshold and be used for 1.2Tbit/s single-carrier transmission over short-reach distances. However, pluggable client optics are evolving to 1.6Tbit/s and faster. When Ethernet rates outstrip single-carrier data rates, will the use of superchannels and/or optical sub-carriers become unavoidable to accommodate ever-higher client data rates?

In this short course, Sander Jansen and Dirk van den Borne will give an overview of Terabit-class DWDM transport systems. They will examine the limits of single-carrier transport in terms of optical system performance, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of superchannels and spectral engineering for P2P and P2MP transport.
