As optical networks scale to support higher-capacity links and AI-driven data traffic, photodiodes must deliver greater bandwidth, sensitivity and energy efficiency without increasing complexity or power consumption. New approaches in avalanche photodiodes, balanced detection and heterogeneous integration are helping overcome these challenges while enabling more compact and efficient optical receivers.

In this session, Despoina Petousi and Selina Farwell co-chair presentations from researchers at NTT, imec, CEA, NICT, SiFotonics and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Highlights include a record 9460GHz gain-bandwidth Si-Ge avalanche photodiode, a bias-free 200GHz photodetector, low-voltage Ge/Si avalanche photodiodes and heterogeneous silicon nitride waveguide integration. The session will provide an overview of the latest advances in photodiode design and integration for future high-speed optical communications systems.
