High-voltage transmission networks rely on optical ground wire (OPGW) for communications and operational support. Maintenance activities can place mechanical stress on this infrastructure, creating a need for accurate monitoring and verification. Distributed sensing technologies offer new ways to observe maintenance operations and assess infrastructure condition using existing fiber assets.

In this poster presentation, Konstantinos Alexoudis will discuss results from dual-modal distributed sensing deployed on an operational OPGW during a maintenance operation on a 110-kV overhead line. He’ll demonstrate how distributed acoustic sensing detects and characterizes maintenance activities, while distributed temperature and strain sensing reveals a localized residual strain signature following reclamping. Attendees will learn how these techniques can support maintenance verification and ongoing asset monitoring using existing network infrastructure.
