High network availability is essential for supporting critical digital services. Physical disruptions and environmental factors along fiber routes can threaten service continuity and lead to costly repairs. Distributed fiber sensing offers new opportunities to identify risks and monitor infrastructure, but integrating sensing capabilities alongside live traffic creates challenges that must be carefully managed to maintain network performance.
In this session, André Sandmann will present a framework for improving network availability through integrated distributed fiber sensing. He will examine how high-spatial-resolution sensing can coexist with parallel data channels operating on separate wavelengths within existing transmission systems. The presentation explores different sensing techniques allowing for joint communication and sensing, and how they can be combined to enable the early identification of critical events. In addition, challenges associated with the effective adoption of sensing to protect optical networks will be discussed. Attendees will gain insight into how advanced sensing technologies can help operators strengthen their infrastructure while maintaining reliable network performance.
