Daniel Burch talks timing and sync modernization for power networks at NASPI 2023
Presentation will explore how Adtran’s Oscilloquartz timing technology enables power networks to become smarter and more resilient
- Speakers: Daniel Burch, positioning, navigation and timing expert, Oscilloquartz, Adtran
- Topics: Lessons learned from the use of Precision Time Protocol by electricity utilities
- When: Wednesday, September 27, 11:50 a.m. EDT
- Where: The North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group Hybrid Meeting and Vendor Show, EPRI Charlotte Office, Charlotte, North Carolina
Power grids have long relied on GNSS-derived timing to synchronize networks. However, this is no longer sufficient because GNSS is vulnerable to cyberattacks that can disrupt operations. Grids are also evolving to become smarter and more decentralized. To ensure the security and optimal functionality of this new way of generating and distributing electricity, more resilient and accurate timing technologies are required.
In this session, Daniel Burch will explain how power utilities can harness Adtran’s Oscilloquartz technology to seamlessly migrate to PTP-based timing. He will also demonstrate how Oscilloquartz solutions use a combination of threat detection, multi-source back-up and mitigation to ensure the continuous operation of timing networks when GNSS is unavailable.
