Sonic booms broadband in Oakland with Adtran 10G Combo PON technology

Adtran enables ISP to expand the network and maintain the fastest internet in California

Adtran®, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN), the leading provider of next-generation multigigabit fiber and fiber extension broadband access solutions, today announced Sonic is leveraging the Adtran Total Access 5000 (TA5000) 10Gbit/s fiber access platform and Combo PON technology to increase its market share and expand its fiber network into Oakland, California. Sonic, California’s fastest internet provider, chose Adtran’s Combo PON solutions to efficiently support both existing GPON services and new XGS-PON services to deploy a future-proof FTTH network.

Oakland has the second highest population density within the eight million people living in San Francisco Bay Area, sitting only behind San Francisco itself. Many global corporations have headquarters in Oakland, including leading consumer product brands, streaming music services, and healthcare companies—all needing reliable connectivity to support essential digital initiatives, like cloud services, edge computing, and IoT. Not only does the dense urban environment of Oakland make the city attractive to businesses and residents, but it is a highly competitive region among service providers as well.

As Sonic planned to expand its fiber network into Oakland, it needed a high-capacity solution capable of multigigabit service rates to support today’s bandwidth-hungry subscribers and tomorrow’s future demands. The Adtran TA5000 platform is the highest density 10Gbit/s PON solution in the US market and serves as the foundation for the industry’s most comprehensive 10Gbit/s portfolio. The Adtran Combo PON technology allows both GPON and XGS-PON services to be delivered simultaneously over the same fiber optical distribution network using a single common interface. This lowers cost, power, and space requirements, while also shrinking time-to-market, all contributing to increased network ROI.

“Sonic’s long-standing relationship with Adtran enables us to maintain a cutting-edge fiber network that delivers reliable connectivity to our subscribers. We looked to continue that tradition when expanding our footprint into Oakland, and Adtran’s Combo PON technology was the right solution to do that,” said Nathan Patrick, CTO at Sonic. “Delivering 10Gbit/s customer connections on day one means we won’t have to revisit those same customers’ homes and businesses for years to come. That reduces our costs, protects market share, and enables us to rapidly evolve our network to support the latest broadband technologies while consistently delivering California’s fastest internet.”

“Many service providers large and small are looking to grow market share but entering a highly competitive new market demands a differentiated service offering. Our customers, large and small, are leveraging our Combo PON technology to quickly and easily deploy high-capacity services. That makes our Combo PON OLT our fastest selling product ever,” said Craig Stein, VP of sales at Adtran. “We’re proud to partner with service providers, like Sonic, that continue to push the envelope and create amazing broadband experiences.”
