SD-Access unleashes lucrative user-driven service delivery model

HUNTSVILLEAla.--(November 7, 2016)—ADTRAN®, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation open networking solutions, today announced the availability of its highly programmable 10G-PON SD-Access portfolio of residential and business gateways powered by ADTRAN Mosaic™ OS. The cost-effective, highly-elastic SD-Access gateways are natively integrated into the ADTRAN Mosaic Cloud architecture, extending SDN control to the customer edge and supporting service orchestration across the entire access network. The ADTRAN SDX 600 gateways and Mosaic OS represent the culmination of ADTRAN’s market-leading assets by integrating field-proven business VoIP, Carrier Ethernet and dynamic RF management and Self Optimizing Network (SON) capabilities into residential solutions.

“Service providers have historically faced a common problem with ONTs being closed and proprietary. Native SDN control allows for greatly simplified interoperability, breaking service providers out of the vendor lock-in that exists in traditional PON systems,” said Julie Kunstler, principal analyst, Ovum. “A direct cloud to subscriber edge, software-defined management architecture, like ADTRAN’s, removes the need for lengthy multi-vendor integration cycles and enables the service provider to rapidly evolve its service offerings by taking advantage of emerging technologies.”

The highly-programmable ADTRAN SDX 600 residential and business 10 Gigabit gateways are the first of their kind, supporting NG-PON2 and XGS-PON to unleash the capacity of fiber networks. When these SD-Access solutions are deployed at a customer site and paired with a unifying next-generation OS and cloud platform, such as ADTRAN Mosaic, service providers can create a powerful user-driven service delivery platform. This approach to user-driven service delivery enables telco and cable providers to operate at web-scale, supporting expanded service flexibility and velocity for voice, data, video and smart home applications.

“Service providers are demanding highly programmable residential and business gateways that support both an agile 10Gbps physical connection and a zero-touch deployment model which leads to dramatically reduced operational costs and improved quality of experience,” said Jeremy Harris, portfolio manager, customer devices, ADTRAN. “ADTRAN SD-Access architectures allow service providers to support rapid service creation and customer expansion while enjoying new paradigms in network efficiency.”

In partnership with Spirent at MEF16 in Baltimore, November 7-10, ADTRAN will host a Proof of Concept (PoC) showcase to demonstrate solutions for rapid, zero-touch on-boarding of cloud-based 10G Carrier Ethernet services over SDN-controlled NG-PON2 networks. This will include proactive assurance of services with automated turn-up verification, intelligent SLA monitoring and programmable network modification.

  • 07/18/17 - ADTRAN and Deutsche Telekom look to Ultra Broadband Evolution to Advance the Gigabit Society +

Darmstadt, Germany - July 18, 2017 - ADTRAN®, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation open networking solutions, today announced the start of lab testing of the latest innovations in the G.fast standard, 212MHz and coordinated dynamic time allocation (cDTA) together with Deutsche Telekom (DT). DT is evaluating these ultra-broadband technologies using Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) deployment models allowing the use of existing cable infrastructure within the home. This will allow the rapid deployment of ultra-fast and gigabit broadband services with minimal disruption. The low cost per subscriber connection pays directly into achieving European Commission’s Gigabit Society goals. ADTRAN demonstrated the new 212MHz G.fast standard, which doubles the usable spectrum. This doubling of the usable spectrum allows service providers to deliver gigabit rates over a single copper pair, enabling robust fibre-like service delivery all the way to the customer premise. In contrast to cable systems, the bandwidth of G.fast is dedicated and available for each customer. The tests, leveraging the first commercially available 212MHz DPU also demonstrated the second phase of DTA. cDTA, like the earlier iDTA feature, improves G.fast upstream performance by four to five times by dynamically balancing upstream and downstream capacity to match residential traffic patterns in real-time. cDTA also Read More
  • 05/30/17 - ADTRAN RFoG Beats OBI without Cabinets +

Optical Beat Interference mitigation provides MSOs ability to scale fiber broadband without boxing them in with the need for centralized cabinet expense BERLIN--(May 30, 2017)—ADTRAN®, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation open networking solutions, today announced its Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG) solution with Optical Beat Interference (OBI) mitigation technology. This RFoG solution accelerates an MSO’s FTTH initiatives by supporting the reuse of existing CATV assets within both the headend and home. This greatly extends the return on investment cycle while smoothing the transition from hybrid fiber coax and CATV-based triple play to Gigabit FTTH and IPTV-ready deployment models. As RFoG deployments increase in density, the likelihood of OBI occurring greatly increases. OBI is caused by simultaneous upstream optical transmissions by multiple cable modems leading to impaired reception at all upstream frequencies impacting key applications like voice, live video and social media. “The need to support reliable voice and ultra-fast broadband is key to securing lucrative triple play revenues for MSOs in a changing competitive landscape,” said Erik Keith, principal analyst, GlobalData. “As MSOs look to build out their fiber infrastructure to support rich video content, ADTRAN RFoG OBI solutions allow them to deliver the requisite customer experience while Read More

Testing will focus on several features of NG-PON2, including tuning performance, ability to carry residential and business services on the same platform, and interoperability and conformance testing to meet Verizon ONT specifications. “When it comes to NG-PON2, ADTRAN and Ericsson/Calix have developed new designs and some novel, yet different, approaches that put them at the forefront of the industry,” said Vincent O’Byrne, Ph.D., director of network planning for Verizon. Verizon is assessing this next-generation technology to provide increased speeds and functionality to customers on its Fios network. NG-PON2 technology supports up to 40G of total capacity and up to 10G speeds per customer, both upstream and downstream, over a single fiber – a tenfold increase over some of the current speeds in the industry.
