GPONGigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology advances the public communications network using traditional telephone services (POTS), high speed data services, and video services. A GPON network consists of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) located at the CO and a set of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) located at the customer's premises. Between them lies the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) consisting of fibers and passive splitters or couplers. In a PON, a single piece of fiber can be run from the serving exchange out to a subdivision or office park. Then, individual fiber strands can be run to each building. This allows one fiber cable to be shared by many customers, thereby dramatically lowering the overall costs of deployment for Fiber To The Premises (FTTP). ADTRAN's Total Access 5000 provides FTTP with a GPON 2.5 Gbps Optical Line Terminal (OLT) solution, including a full line of Total Access 300 GPON Optical Network Terminals (ONTs).
