ADTRAN TECHNICAL SUPPORT NOTE

Using ADTRAN ISU ® Products with VTEL Mediamax Video Teleconferencing Systems

Survey: Does this Technical Support Note answer your question? Yes No

Introduction

This document outlines the use of ADTRAN ISU products with VTEL Mediamax video teleconferencing systems (Version 3.0 tested). This configuration uses RS-366 dialing and V.35 data port cables included with the video system. These cables are the same cables as are used with Switched 56 DSU/CSUs. This configuration supports calls made to an IMUX (Inverse MUX) using BONDING Mode 1 and to other systems using Switched 56 kbps DSU/CSUs by using smart dial strings provided in the ADTRAN ISU 2x64 and ADTRAN ISU 512.

Configuring the VTEL Mediamax Video Teleconferencing System to Support ADTRAN ISU Products

ISU 512 Setup
Prior to running the VTEL video teleconferencing system software for the first time, manually pre-configure the ISU 512 settings. The ISU 512 also requires Network Options configuration. Referring to the ISU User Manual, verify the following settings on the unit:

ISU 2x64 Setup
Prior to running the VTEL video teleconferencing system software for the first time, manually pre-configure the ISU 2x64 settings. The ISU 2x64 also requires Network Options configuration. Referring to the ISU User Manual, verify the following settings on the unit:

Note: DTE #2 on the ISU 2x64 is the primary DTE port. This requires the DTE #1 V.35 and RS-366 cables be reversed with DTE #2 V.35 and RS-366.

VTEL Video Teleconferencing System Setup

  1. Follow the installation instructions supplied with the VTEL video teleconferencing system to properly configure the video and audio protocols.
  2. Type CO to get to the COM Menu.
  3. Configure this menu to match the parameters in Table-1.

  4. Configure the locations to be dialed using smart dial strings.

    An example of a Dial Number would be 1 XXXXXX XXXX #C #R.

    #C changes the Call Type as follows:
    1=Speech
    2=Audio
    3=56k Data
    4=64k Data
    #R (only on the ISU 512) changes the channel rate (number of ISDN B channels) as explained in Chapter 3 of the ISU 512 User Manual.

  5. Now you should be ready to test the system.

Note: The ADTRAN 530A-to-V.35 adapter (part number 1200072L1) is not a passive cable and does voltage level conversion.

Your VTEL video teleconferencing system should now be ready to dial.

Troubleshooting Tips

  1. Problems may be isolated by using the test and diagnostic capability built into the ADTRAN ISU product. First refer to the chapter on troubleshooting in the ISU User Manual to correct any problems with the ISDN network configuration. If the ISDN network configuration problems cannot be resolved, contact your ADTRAN distributor for configuration support.

  2. Assuming your ISU device displays ADTRAN ISU XXXX XXXXX READY, and this is not a false ready state, you can verify that the cables between the VTEL video teleconferencing system and the ISU adapters are connected. This can be done by looping back the DTE from the test menu of the ISU unit and configuring the VTEL video teleconferencing system for direct connection (refer to VTEL User Manual or Technical Support for details). This should return the picture and sound to the video teleconferencing system.

If you experience any problems using your ADTRAN product, please contact ADTRAN Technical Support.
