The ATLAS series of Integrated Access Devices (IADs) support dynamic circuit switching capabilities and call-by-call routing. This enables T1 or PRI channels to be shared between multiple applications. In this solution example, ATLAS is configured to emulate switched services over a T1. Some of the DS0s within the point to point T1 are set up as shared and switched channels. This allows the video and voice calls to dynamically access those channels of the bandwidth.
ATLAS switching allows customers to eliminate dedicated bandwidth for each application. For example, in many cases such as videoconferencing, bandwidth for video transmissions is needed infrequently. Using ATLAS as a switch enables video and voice to share access to channels, which makes the network more efficient and lowers overall communications costs.
In this solution example, the ATLAS 550 is providing both dedicated and switched services over the T1. For example, DS0 channels 1-6 could be set up as dedicated for the data application, while channels 7-24 could be set up as switched services to be shared between voice and video.
In an enterprise network, the ATLAS located at the central or headquarters location can also provide switched access to the public network for both the local and remote users.
